Standerton community wants justice for Buhle

“We are tired. We are angry. We are fed up,” shouted community activist Mbali Luthuli.

Hundreds of voices joined as one on June 3, demanding justice for Buhlebenkosi Makhanda, who was murdered in Sakhile on May 31.

Supporters, family members, GBV activists, and many community members gathered at the municipal offices in Sakhile to honour her memory with a candlelight prayer.

“We are tired. We are angry. We are fed up,” shouted community activist Mbali Luthuli.

The massive crowd of supporters took part in a peaceful and orderly walk towards the hostels during the protest. During the walk, they remembered victims of domestic violence and GBV, sending a clear message to all victims, known and unknown.

“You are not alone. We, as a community, sing because we are sad; we sing for justice,” stated Luthuli.

Though little information has been released about Makhanda’s murder, Captain Braam Robberts of the Standerton SAPS disclosed that the Khunjuliwe Secondary School learner was found murdered and half-naked next to a graveyard on June 1.

Robberts also revealed that the deceased had gunshot wounds on her upper body.

“The case is currently being investigated, and all possibilities are being considered,” concluded Robberts.

A media statement compiled by Brigadier Donald Mdhululi stated that officials believe Makhanda may have been raped.

Minutes before her death, Makhanda was seen walking with a friend. Multiple suspects approached them and robbed them of their personal belongings.

Makhanda and her friend were held at gunpoint; however, he was allowed to escape while the assailants remained alone with Makhanda.

Friends of the deceased describe her as kind, energetic, and bubbly. She was only 20 years old and would have celebrated her 21st birthday in July this year.

Makhanda was deeply loved by her community and was known as a helpful, people-oriented person who made friends wherever she went.
