Delmas SAPS nab man with illegal gun

The SAPS arrested him on June 13 while acting on a tip-off about suspicious activity in the area and did a targeted search.

A 26-year-old man appeared in the Delmas Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The SAPS arrested him on June 13 while acting on a tip-off about suspicious activity in the area and did a targeted search.

Officers found the man with a 9mm firearm with its serial number filed off, one magazine and 38 rounds of live 9mm ammunition.

They confiscated the weapon and ammunition. Investigations are ongoing to trace the origin of the gun and determine any possible links to criminal activity in the Delmas area.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said the firearm would be sent for ballistic testing to establish whether it was used in the commission of other crimes.

“The SAPS urge the public to report suspicious activity or illegal firearms to their nearest police station or call SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said Ndubane.

Acting provincial commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi welcomed the arrest and thanked the community for its co-operation.

“If we continue working together by reporting criminal activities, we can reduce crime and create safer communities,” he said.
