Secunda Police warn parents to report rape cases

W/O Gloudie Sachse, of the FCA Unit, urged women to report cases if their husbands, boyfriends, or life partners or anyone with whom they are in a close relationship abuse or sexually assault their children.

The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit had a successful few months with good sentences at court.

A Secunda-man was sentenced to life imprisonment on several charges including rape and sexual grooming of a child.

Jacobus Olivier (36) was found guilty and sentenced in the Secunda Regional Court in June to 20 years imprisonment.

He raped a 10-year-old boy in 2018.

Mbokazi Vusi (54) was sentenced on August 23 to 18 years imprisonment for raping a woman.

W/O Gloudie Sachse, of the FCA Unit, urged women to report cases if their husbands, boyfriends, or life partners or anyone with whom they are in a close relationship abuse or sexually assault their children.

“If a woman fails to report such cases, she can also be arrested and go to prison,” said W/O Sachse.

“Believe your child if they come to you and tell you somebody hurt them.”

In another case, a couple got a three-year suspended sentence.

The 41-year-old woman was sentenced for failure to report and her 35-year-old fiancé was sentenced for the possession of child pornography.

The couple allegedly made the woman’s son walk around in a dress, lifting the dress up and exposing his private parts while the couple took a video.

The couple claimed they did not know it was against the law.

“Any videos, photos or selfies you take of your private parts, are wrong,” said W/O Sachse.

“It is against the law and you can be arrested for the creating and possession of child pornography.

“If you send those photos or videos to anyone, you can be arrested for the distribution of child pornography.”

W/O Sachse said this is a problem especially among high school learners.

In another case, a 45-year-old man from Trichardt will appear in court in Secunda on September, 23 on a charge of abusing his girlfriend’s child in 2019 when the child was 13 years old.

The mother will also be appearing in court on a charge of failure to report the case.
