High Court in Delmas metes out hefty sentence to muderer from Sakhile

He stabbed his girlfriend in the neck and then set the room in which her body was on fire.

The Delmas High Court on Friday, November 4, sentenced Dumisane Pat Thanjekwayo (35) to life imprisonment for murdering his girlfriend in Sakhile last year.

Thanjekwayo and Nompumelelo Memela had an argument in his room on May 24, 2021.

During the argument, Thanjekwayo stabbed the deceased multiple times with a sharp instrument, and then set the room, with Memela’s body inside, alight.

Memela was burnt beyond recognition.

Her family was alerted to the fire and attempted to quench the fire. In meantime, Thanjekwayo fled the scene.

The police later received a tip-off that Thanjekwayo stabbed himself in the neck.

The police alerted the Standerton Hospital and clinics to be on the look out for a man fitting the description with self-inflicted neck injuries and Thanjekwayo was later arrested at Standerton Hospital.

Detective Sergeant PA Tsotetsi secured the conviction.
