Four suspected of tower battery theft, remain in custody

The case was postponed to December 19.

Secunda Magistrate’s Court remanded in custody three Mozambican citizens, Tinda Mhlangu (29), Dray Madziva (26) and Gondai Mlambo (35), and South African Barry Mosiana (34), December 17 for possession of suspectedstolen cellphone tower batteries.

They were arrested on December 13.

Information was received and operationalised by a team comprising Secunda Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit , Secunda Crime Intelligence and Secunda K9 regarding suspects who were stealing tower batteries.

The team conducted an intelligence driven operation and found the four suspects in possession of tower batteries.

They were arrested, charged and detained.

The stolen batteries and vehicle used during the commission of crime were seized for further investigation.

The court case was postponed to December 19 for Legal Aid services.

The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Major General Nico Gerber applauded the collaboration of the team and the public for providing information which led to the arrest of the suspects.

“As the Hawks, we shall arrest all perpetrators who damage infrastructure, without fear or favour.”
