The management of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) urged people to donate blood for Women’s Day, celebrated on Tuesday, August 9.
As SANBS celebrates Women’s Day, the communications officer, Khensani Mahlangu, said some may question the strength of a woman, but time and again, women have displayed perseverance in all areas of their lives.
He said blood transfusion daily save the lives of women who experience excessive blood loss during childbirth.
“Nearly 26% of all blood collected by SANBS is used for these women’s treatment,” said Mahlangu.
Thandi Mosupye, SANBS’s senior manager of marketing, brand and communications, said they are passionate about women who are caregivers, nurturers and mentors to the nation.
“Join us in giving back to the mothers, aunts, grandmothers and sisters who played pivotal roles in raising us, by donating blood to save them when they need it most,” said Mosupye.
She said people who are not able to donate, can still help the SANBS by collecting much-needed blood.
“In everyone’s networks of friends, family members, colleagues and their communities, there will always be someone who is able to donate blood.
“Partner with us and lend a hand in ramping up recruitment efforts by urging healthy, eligible blood donors to donate blood.
“Alternatively, you can host a Good Hood blood drive in your community to help blood recipients who live among you.
“One blood donation can save up to three lives.”
