GMM’s municipal manager speaks at CPF’s public meeting
Police provide the crime stats for Trichardt for last month.
Residents raised their concerns about Trichardt at the Community Policing Forum (CPF) meeting on February 16 at Laerskool Trichardt.
Besides the municipal manager of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, Elliot Maseko, councillors and municipal officials from various departments being in attendance, many residents, representatives from various organisations, businesses, and emergency services were also present.
Maseko said the municipality knows of the residents’ complaints about potholes, stormwater drains not working, electricity meters, and road markings.
He said Trichardt and Leandra will next receive attention from the municipality regarding service delivery.
“We will also tend to the roads, especially Bekker Street, and the infrastructure,” said Maseko.
He said he will give the chairperson of the CPF, Clarke van der Walt, the programme of when and where the municipality will work on problems in Trichardt.
“We know the roads next to the hospital are bad. We have some work there,” said Maseko.
“Many of the streetlights do not work. We fixed some of them in Secunda. Within a month or two, they did not function anymore.
“Some traffic lights do not work because people steal them. We are looking at other options, for example, installing wireless traffic lights.

“We have a problem in the Govan Mbeki municipal area. When people see the public infrastructure, they think they must break it.
“Cable theft is a big problem, and we are looking for solutions to protect our network. I believe we must work together and communicate. The CPF is an important role player in the community.”
Some residents raised other issues, including the condition of the roads in Trichardt, open electrical boxes without locks or protection, and the drainage systems
Maseko said they have looked at the stormwater drains that do not work and are aware of where all the problem areas in Trichardt are.
