Last week, the town of Cullinan was plunged into darkness for over 48 hours after criminals axed electrical cables and damaged two critical electrical substations in the area.
The incident caused widespread disruption in the town, with many smaller businesses that cannot afford generators forced to close their doors.
The residents lost the food they had in their fridges.
According to Clr Johannes Bekker of Ward 100, the thieves targeted the substations, most likely with the intent to loot, and cut the electrical cables with an axe, causing extensive damage.
Both substations, one close to Magalies Water and the other near Clinix Hospital, are close to houses and security, but the crime seemed to go unnoticed and unheard by residents and security guards even though the criminals would have made significant noise when cutting the cables.
Officials worked tirelessly and under pressure to rebuild the Magalies substation while the other teams investigated further issues.
“In our economic climate, there is no money to pay overtime, and the residents need to try and understand this.”
Camera footage is being checked for suspects. However, at this point, it is difficult to point to anyone, said Bekker, who added that there is proof of one suspect often seen tampering with the substations.
“The residents can be assured that action against anyone found guilty of this criminal act will be taken.”
According to Bekker, negotiations with Clinix Hospital are underway to help secure the infrastructure close to them. The same will happen with Magalies Water.
Additional cameras across the town are being installed, and security guards will be employed to guard the substations and report suspicious behaviour.
The CPF Cullinan is patrolling the streets, as was done during the Covid restrictions.
“We, as residents, must realise that it is also our responsibility to guard our areas and report anything out of kilter.”
The incident is a stark reminder of the need for stronger action to tackle cable theft and protect critical infrastructure in South Africa. It is hoped the authorities will take swift action to address the issues to prevent similar incidents.
Only once the repairs are complete will the costs of the damage be confirmed.
