Water levels at Grootdraai Dam in Standerton stand at 98.6%

Most of the listed dams in the Gert Sibande District recorded declines in water levels.

Mpumalanga water levels continued with a slight decline as the rainfall season passes.

According to the Department of Water and Sanitation’s weekly state of reservoirs report, levels in the listed dams and water management areas show the average levels dropped from 99.0% to 98.8%.

In the water management areas, the Olifants remained unchanged at 89.7% and the Inkomati-Usuthu dropped from 100.0% to 99.7%.

In the districts, all three recorded declines in water volumes, with Ehlanzeni dropping from 100.4% to 100.3%, Gert Sibande dropping from 99.4% to 99.1% and Nkangala dropping from 96.9% to 96.8%.

Only three dams recorded improvements in volumes. Longmere and Klipkopjes dams in Ehlanzeni district recorded improvement from 100.9% to 101.1% and 99.6% to 99.8%, respectively, and the Middelburg Dam in Nkangala district increased from 96.4% to 96.6%.

Most of the listed dams in the Gert Sibande District recorded declines in water levels, with Vygeboom and Heyshope dams remaining unchanged at 100.4% and 100.5%, respectively.

The Grootdraai Dam dropped from 99.0% to 98.6%, Nooitgedacht from 99.5% to 98.5%, Jericho from 95.4% to 94.6%, Westoe from 95.1% to 93.3% and Morgenstond from 100.3% to 100.2%.

The department urged the public to continue using available water wisely and sparingly, especially during the dry winter.

They further encouraged the public to protect water infrastructure to prevent unnecessary loss of water, as every drop counts.
