Govan Mbeki Municipality in consultation with the residents about new electricity meters

The senior technician said the old meters will stop working next year. The new meters will also be safer.

Some eMbalenhle residents are questioning the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s rush to install new electricity meters when many electricity problems in the township still persist.

The municipality is consulting with the eMbalenhle community about its plan to install the electricity split meters.

When addressing the Ext 22 community on May 17, the municipality’s senior technician, Elijah Mkhombe, said the current meters are outdated and no longer safe.

Mkhombe said split meters are safer because it trips if there is an electrical fault. According to him, the community will no longer be plagued by houses and shacks being destroyed by electricity.

“The prepaid meter problem is not only affecting our municipality but the country. Next year, many electricity meters will stop working unless they are updated.

“That is another reason we want everyone to migrate to the latest technology to avoid a total blackout,” said Mkhombe.

Mkhombe said the rollout will begin soon and even those who cannot afford to buy electricity won’t be left out.

Some community members wanted to know about their free electricity units which they do not get from the municipality, but Mkhombe said once the new meters are installed, the municipality would consider it.

Recently, the municipality issued a notice to its prepaid electricity customers to comply by updating their information with the municipality or they will face interruptions in their services.
