Cullinan’s Pigs ’n Paws is a sanctuary for pigs
Pig Sanctuary in Cullinan helps pigs in need.
Pigs ’n Paws is an NPC situated 13km outside of Cullinan, which was started in May of 2020. They rescue pigs that have been abused, exploited or discarded.
Due to the unfortunate interest in getting pot-belly pigs as pets in the last decade or so, Pigs ’n Paws had to open their doors and hearts to numerous pigs in need.
“We offer all our pigs love, respect and rehabilitation when needed,” explained Antoinette Steyn.
“We find loving homes for the pigs that are adoptable and offer lifetime refuge and sanctum to those who stay.”
According to Steyn, Pig ’n Paws is currently the largest pig sanctuary in South Africa, being home to about 300 pigs of all shapes and sizes, three cows, three sheep, and a good number of dogs and cats.
She drives to the market five times a week to buy fresh vegetables such as butternut, pumpkin, carrots, spinach, squash, sweet potatoes and sometimes beetroot.
The pigs get vegetables five times a week and Hominy chop, which is a mixture of maize bran, maize leaves, maize stalks, maize cobs, and Lucerne, twice a week.
“We aim to educate the public about pigs and their choices regarding these sentient beings,” explained Steyn.
“We also advise pig owners on how best to look after their pigs to ensure a long, loving, and successful mutual companionship.”
Steyn said pot-belly pigs can become difficult to handle once they get older because pigs are clever animals that can challenge a person in every possible way.
