Deon Bekker from Standerton now serves as PR-councillor for the DA
Bekker stood as candidate in the fiercely contested Ward 10 in the previous municipal election, and lost to Wilma Venter of the Freedom Front Plus by a margin of 120 votes.
Deon Bekker of the DA served on the council of the Gert Sibande District Municipality since October last year but has now taken up a position in the council of the Lekwa Municipality as PR councillor.
Altogether five permanent DA councillors represent the party in the district.
Bekker stood as a candidate in the fiercely contested Ward 10 in the previous municipal election, losing to Wilma Venter of the Freedom Front Plus by a margin of 120 votes.
“Head office asked me whether I will be prepared to serve on the council in Standerton, taking into account the general election of 2024,” Bekker said.
“The DA aims to take the ward back in the 2025 local government elections.”
Bekker has 15 years of experience on the senior municipal level and 16 years at the IEC. According to him, the party is now canvassing in Meyerville where a by-election is scheduled for October 25.
Thinus Jansen van Vuuren will stand as a candidate for the DA. Jansen van Vuuren has extensive knowledge of municipal affairs since he acted as secretary at the Lekwa Municipality for several years.
“There is nobody with a better knowledge of councils than him,” Bekker added.
As to the chances for success for the DA in Meyerville, he only said: “The DA has a 50/50 per cent chance to win the election. We do not make promises, we perform.”
