Mama Hlatswayo walks the streets to care for the homeless in Standerton

The project’s present decline has not dampened Mama’s enthusiasm, and she recently began reaching out to job-seekers on the pavements on Burger Street, near the station.

Mama Hlatswayo, as she is known by many, cares for those in need, and few people can keep up with her way of life.

She is the manager of Kuyenzeka Kunkulunkulu, translated as ‘Everything is possible through God’.

This NPO reaches out to homeless people and operates out of an office at a local business premises.

She started her work by offering a meal and a message to homeless people at the back of the premises on Saturday afternoons. More than a year later, she stopped doing this because of a lack of helpers.

Mama Hlatswayo followed up by hitting the streets and trying to convince the ’outies’ to come in for a wash, clean clothes, soup or porridge, and a message of hope from the Bible.

She is an assistant pastor at a church in Sakhile.

This venture eventually reached a low point because many homeless people earn some money by pushing trolleys or carrying parcels in the parking lots.

Attending Mama’s project causes them to lose income, and their absence from the parking lots invites their opposition to take over the territory.

Another problem hampering her project is the shortage of donations.

Most homeless people are dirty, have torn clothes, smell, and are addicted to substances, so they hardly provoke sympathy from the community.

The generous monthly donations by Highveld Milling and Veggie Spot have kept the project going since the beginning, and Mama expressed her gratitude to them.

The project’s present decline has not dampened her enthusiasm, and she recently began reaching out to job-seekers on the pavements of Burger Street, near the station.

She prepares the soup or porridge in her office and delivers it to the job-seekers in takeaway containers.

The businessman of the premises in which Mama operates said she was a remarkable example of someone driven by the love of God.
