Open manhole in Kinross is still a problem
Municipality cannot explain why manhole is left open.
After a municipal vehicle knocked over a pole and left a manhole broken and open in front of the Sasolia Primary School, the municipality failed to answer questions from the Ridge Times.
Residents who complained about the open manhole said it was a danger to the school children walking past every day and playing in the area.
One resident, Bruno Kakora, said he and the school principal contacted the municipality to report it, but to no avail.
The Ridge Times asked the spokesman of Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM), Donald Green, if the municipality was aware of this issue when they are going to fix it, why it is taking so long to fix it, the municipality’s rules and policy for an open manhole and if it is usually just left like that, but instead of answering the questions, he explained the process to lodge a complaint at the municipality.
Green also said they sent the matter to the regional manager of the area and the relevant department for a follow-up and to attend to it.

Green explained the GMM’s complaint-handling process for customers whose query is not attended to or not resolved to their satisfaction.
“Any person may lodge a complaint about any aspect of the municipality’s services. The GMM encourages customers to call the call centre on 0800 6000 01/2/4 or send a WhatsApp message to 083 790 0659/ 082 343 2422.
“When reporting, the following information is required: customer name, ERF number and/or account number, street address and a brief description of the problem.
“Once the call is lodged, the municipality sends a reference number for the complaint or query to the provided cell phone number.
“The call centre official will then assign the query to the relevant department for action to be taken.
“Please note that each department has its own time frames to deal with queries.”
He said to follow up on issues when a response is not forthcoming or has not been resolved to your satisfaction and may escalate a complaint by writing to the offices of the regional managers.
The details of the regional managers are:
• Region 1 (Bethal, eMzinoni and Milan Park) Lolo Dube to lolo.d@govanmbeki.gov.za
• Region 2 (Secunda, Trichardt, Evander, Kinross, Leandra and Lebohang) Solly Gumede to solly.g@govanmbeki.gov.za
• Region 3 (eMbalenhle and Charl Cilliers) Mangaliso Mashiane to mangaliso.m@govanmbeki.gov.za
Green said if the customer is still not satisfied with the outcome, he can send an email to the office of the municipal manager at office.mm@govanmbeki.gov.za
