Correctional Service officials reach out to Tshabalala family during squash tournament
Correctional Service Officials donated R5 800.
Competitors on the squash court united in reaching out to a family in need when 80 Department of Correctional Services officials came together for the cause of assisting an eMbalenhle widow and resident, Maria Tshabalala (66), with some groceries and supplies.
Department of Correctional Services (DCS) squash president and former Bethal Management Area acting area commissioner, Dominic Zulu, led the team of officials participating in the DCS Squash National Championship in a song and carrying groceries to the Tshabalala’s home on October 4.
As part of the DCS community outreach programme, the teams visited Tshabalala, who looks after and shares a four-room dilapidated shack with four grandchildren and three great–grandchildren. Officials handed over groceries of R5 800 to the Tshabalala family.
“The donation was made possible by the officials that participated in the squash national championships,” said Zulu when handing over the groceries to the family.

Correctional Service officials competed in the annual Squash National Championships, hosted by the Bethal Management area, at the Sasol Recreational Club, Secunda, from October 2 to 5.
Zulu also committed that all heads of correctional centres will put their heads together to discuss a plan for improving the structure of the Tshabalala family.
Speaking on behalf of the Bethal Management Area, the area coordinator of corporate service, Mzwamakhaya Dlepu, thanked the DCS squash team for the initiative and efforts of reaching out to the Tshabalala family.
Tshabalala expressed her gratitude to DCS and the team for what they have done for her family and said, “I was so distressed, not knowing what to do with these children, but I never ceased to keep my faith in God.”
Ward 13 Clr Calvin Makhado and social worker Precious Soko applauded the DCS for their donations to the Tshabalala family.
