Evander Police investigate after remains are found in burnt house

Social media posts contained allegations that the woman was locked in the freezer for days.

The Evander police opened an inquest docket after finding human remains in a house that caught fire in Evander on the morning of November 27. The body was burnt beyond recognition.

According to Sergeant Zukiswa Mxhotjelwa, the Evander SAPS spokesperson, the human remains were taken to the science laboratory in Pretoria for DNA tests to establish the gender and identity of the victim.

Mxhotjelwa said the police are investigating the cause of death and the fire. She also said the police do not rely on social media for the information for their investigation.

This comment stems from posts being shared on social media claiming the person who died in the fire was a local woman who was pregnant.

These posts contain allegations the woman’s boyfriend locked her in a freezer for days, and that her boyfriend allegedly also set the house on fire.

The boyfriend responded to the allegations on his Facebook page, saying it is sad how easily people can come up with theories and attack others and disregard the fact that they are mourning.

He did not respond to messages from Ridge Times. Mxhotjelwa said the police are appealing to the people with information about what happened to come forward.

Their identities will remain anonymous. When the newspaper visited the house, the gates were locked.
