Water levels at Grootdraai Dam stand at 81.3%
The remaining two districts recorded declines, with Ehlanzeni dropping from 91.7% to 91.4% and Nkangala dropping from 97.3% to 96.8%.
Grootdraai Dam in the Integrated Vaal River System in the Gert Sibande District in Mpumalanga bounced back above 80% after dropping below that mark at the end of October.
According to the Department of Water and Sanitation’s state of reservoirs report, dated November 27, it recorded an improvement in water levels from 77.0% to 81.3%.
The report also shows the Gert Sibande District is the only district in the province that recorded an improvement in water levels, increasing from 86.5% to 87.8%.
The remaining two districts recorded declines, with Ehlanzeni dropping from 91.7% to 91.4% and Nkangala dropping from 97.3% to 96.8%.
The other listed dams in the district recorded mixed results in dam levels, with some recording declines but most improving in water volumes.
On the upward trend and joining Grootdraai Dam, Nooitgedacht improved from 81.8% to 83.4%, Jericho from 77.0% to 77.6%, and Heyshope increased from 97.4% to 97.5%.
On the decline, Vygeboom Dam dropped from 100.8% to 100.5%, Westoe from 41.2% to 39.4%, and Morgenstond from 96.6% to 95.6%.
In terms of the provincial overview, the average dams recorded a slight improvement from 90.9% to 91.2% whereas the Water Management Areas recorded declines, with the Olifants dropping from 84.7% to 84.2% and the Inkomati-Usuthu dropping from 91.6% to 91.5%.
The department encouraged the public to be responsible water users and always use the available water in a wise, sparing and conservative manner as South Africa is a water-scarce country.
