eMbalenhle residents stress about hole
Donald Green, the acting communications manager for the GMM said a team has since closed up the hole.
The residents of Ext 22 in eMbalenhle feared for their children’s safety because of a deep hole left by a contractor while installing sewer pipes six years ago.
They claimed the Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) was aware of the hole because they reported it many times.
Gertrude Hadebe said she had to move her grandchildren to a relative because of the hole.
“This hole is dangerous to children and adults. Our municipality is aware of it but keeps quiet.
“This hole is in front of my yard. Current and previous councillors promised to assist us, but nothing happened. I am even scared my RDP house might also sink,” said Hadebe.
Some community members said the municipality was supposed to put a barricade around the hole if they could not fill the hole with gravel or soil.
“It is just by the grace of God that no one has been injured or killed yet,” a neighbour said.
Donald Green, the acting communications manager for the GMM said a team has since closed up the hole.
Green said the municipality continues to do maintenance of storm water drains and sewer systems in eMbalenhle, which included removing small and large items and substances such as sand, debris, rubble, and other refuse.
