Local artists showcase talents at Johannes Stegman Theatre in Secunda

Community wants municipalities to support art.

Local artists showcased their talents in a two-day drama festival at the Johannes Stegmann Theatre in Secunda.

The Imbumba Art Organisation hosted the festival from May 24 to 25. The artists competed for prizes and attended acting workshops led by local performers.

According to Nkosinathi Nkosi, a festival organiser, the goal was to encourage both the Govan Mbeki and Gert Sibande District Municipalities to support local artists.

“We want both municipalities to prioritise local artists by providing platforms and support for their growth, ” said Nkosi.

“Our theatre needs to be active year-round, like those in other provinces. For that to happen, we need support from our leaders. As local artists, we lag behind in development compared to other provinces because we do not receive sufficient support.

“Art can create opportunities for young people to earn a living, yet authorities tend to focus solely on the labour market to address unemployment.

“Art can also contribute to our municipalities’ economies – if we receive the necessary support,” said Nkosi.
