TRICHARDT – Since being appointed as the Vispol commander at Trichardt Police Station in March, Warrant Officer Jabu Mnisi has placed strong emphasis on community engagement, crime prevention and collaborative policing.

 His approach is centred on strengthening cooperation between the SAPS, the CPF, private security companies, rural safety structures, the taxi industry, business forums, the Department of Home Affairs and communities, including informal settlements.

 Through these partnerships, he aims to support efforts to prevent crime, promote safer communities and ensure compliance with applicable legislation and municipal compliance and by-laws unit.

 Mnisi began his SAPS career in July 2009 after completing his training at the SAPS Bisho Academy in King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape.

 He was initially stationed at Springs SAPS, where he served as a student constable in the Community Service Centre and Crime Prevention Unit.

 In April 2015, he transferred to Secunda SAPS, where he served in various capacities, including as a crime prevention officer and sector commander.

 His commitment to policing and community service was recognised when he was awarded Secunda Cluster Policeman of the Year for 2017/18.

 He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in December 2021 and subsequently served as a fleet manager, sector commander and crime prevention commander before being promoted to warrant officer and taking up his current responsibilities at Trichardt SAPS.

 Since joining Trichardt SAPS, Mnisi has prioritised building positive relationships with stakeholders and gaining a better understanding of the challenges faced by the local community.

 “I am committed to building a good working relationship with our stakeholders, the CPF and the community. Effective policing requires cooperation, trust and communication,” said Mnisi.

 One of his early initiatives was to facilitate community imbizo meetings, including engagements in Holfontein informal settlement, where residents were allowed to raise their concerns and discuss practical ways of working together with the police to address crime and other community challenges.

 He has also participated in multidisciplinary operations involving relevant stakeholders, with a focus on addressing crime, ensuring compliance with the law and responding to identified community concerns.

 “The members at Trichardt have been welcoming. I feel at home, and I can execute my duties effectively,” he said.

 Born in Heidelberg, Mnisi comes from a family with a history of police service. He says becoming a police officer was a childhood ambition.

 After matric, he worked as a safety representative at Midrand before eventually pursuing his long-held goal of joining SAPS.

 “Being a policeman is part of who I am. Whether I am on duty or off duty, I believe in conducting myself in a manner that reflects positively on the organisation,” said Mnisi.

 Among the memorable experiences of his career was the arrest of seven stock-theft suspects early in his career in Springs. The incident was one of several that stood out as significant moments in his service.

 Another memorable incident occurred during a routine patrol in the early hours of the morning, when he became suspicious of a vehicle.

His instincts proved correct, as he subsequently assisted in rescuing a kidnapped victim who had been tied up and placed in the boot of the vehicle.

 He also acknowledges the contribution of colleagues who have supported and worked alongside him throughout his career, particularly senior officers who guided him in numerous operations and arrests relating to property-related crimes and drug-related offences.

 “Working with different components, stations and units within SAPS has been an invaluable experience that I will always cherish. It has strengthened my appreciation for teamwork, collaboration, discipline, and a shared commitment to serving the community, which are essential. We understand that teamwork and putting the organisation first are key to effective policing,” Mnisi said.

 Academically, he holds both a diploma and a degree in policing and is currently pursuing an honours degree, with the long-term ambition of obtaining a PhD.

 Outside of his professional and academic commitments, he enjoys running and reading and takes pride in being a father to his nine-year-old son.

 Looking ahead, Mnisi remains focused on contributing positively to SAPS and the Trichardt community by promoting professional policing, strengthening partnerships and supporting initiatives aimed at preventing crime.

 “I remain committed to serving SAPS and the community with integrity, professionalism and dedication. Our success depends on working together and maintaining the trust of the communities we serve,” concluded Mnisi.
