#SasolMarathon: Veteran runner Joseph Mphuthi wins 42km race

Katy Van Meter from the Massmart club was the first woman home in the 42km event.

SECUNDA – Veteran runner Joseph Mphuthi won this year’s 42km Sasol Secunda Marathon race.

He finished the race in 02:27:10, more than a minute ahead of Siyabulela Mqambeli (02:28:35).

Gordon Lesetedi came third with a time of 02:34:01.

Katy van Meter from the Massmart Club was the first woman home in the 42km event. She set a time of 03:00:34.

Natasha Malan came second in a time of 03:15:48 and Bon van Staden crossed the finish line several minutes later in a time of 03:30:40.

Pule Samuel Sibeko from the FS Sibanye Clearwater Club won the 21km race in a time of 1:10:18, with his teammate Gcinimuzi Mokoena short on his tail with a time of 01:10:21.

Lebohang Matima came third. His time was 01:13:34.

The women’s division was won by Paula Quinsee, who also won the veteran’s category. Her time was 01:30:26.

Lou-Anne Smit came second in a time of 01:31:48 and veteran Linah Mhlongo from MPU Eskom, came third in a time of 01:39:49.

Katleho Moloi from KZN won the 10km race in 32:41.

Sasol’s junior runner, Austine Mahlangu came in less than four minutes later in a time of 36:09, followed by Jadulami Mthombemz (36:43) in third place.

Hlonipile Msezane from Ermelo won the 10km race in a time 44:59 followed by Ntombizodwa Ncongwana from Evander Athletics Club (46:38) in second place and Smangele Shabangu from Ermelo (50:02) in third place.

This was the 39th Sasol Secunda Marathon.

According to the Sasol Marathon Club chairman, Mr July Mavuso, this event was even bigger than last year with thousands of runners taking part.

Runners are being supplied with water and fruit during their grueling race on Saturday, 16 February.
