Photos: House fire in Witpoortjie

Firefighters fought for more than an hour to put out the fire.

A house on Hulley Street in Witpoortjie caught fire at about 11.30am this morning (27 January).

According to one of the tenants, Robert O’Neill who stays in a cottage in the back yard, he, his brother, his son, two women and three babies were in the back when he saw smoke billowing from the house.

He immediately ran to the house, thinking the owner’s wife was still inside, and entered through the roof. He could not find her and due to excessive smoke, had to get out of the house.

The two women and three babies managed to escape unscathed to the flats across the road, but O’Neill, his brother and teenage son were treated on scene for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters fought for more than an hour to put out the fire.

It is unclear what caused the fire.
