Strongmen and women do it for Cansa

Among the many groups of athletes who competed were various well-known gym crews in attendance.

As the saying goes, ‘with great power comes great responsibility’.

In support of the Cansa Shavathon at the Irish Rock Little Falls on Saturday, the West Rand’s strongmen and women came together and held a competition in aid of the organisation. All the funds raised by the Strongman Competition went towards Cansa and its fight against cancer.

Garth ‘Granite’ Collins from Gladiators was the MC of the event and encouraged the contestants to give each challenge their best. The restaurant was filled with strongmen and -women and enthusiastic supporters as they showcased their strengths by lifting enormous weights, and cars and flipping 350kg to 450kg tyres. Each competition had a time limit and the crowd helped cheer the contestants on. Among the many groups of athletes who competed on February 25 were various well-known gym crews. Terence Bosman from Area 51 in Honeydew, along with various other businesses in the area helped sponsor the event.

The Community Group Firefighter Association (CGFA) team gave the crowd a demonstration of their teamwork by also doing a challenge.
“The CGFA team will get dressed in their gear, run to the tyres and flip them three times,” explained Garth. They put on their gear and set out in two groups, two members went to flip the smaller 350kg tyre and three of them went to the 450kg tyre. After a moment of struggle, the group decided to join efforts and flip the big tyre together. The crowd cheered and the team greeted everyone. After the show, the spectators were encouraged, as throughout the show, to go and shave or spray their hair for Cansa. Many of the strongmen went and sprayed their beards pink in support.

The strongman competition collected a total of R16 000 for Cansa with 22 men and 8 women competing. The strongman community used their ‘power’ for good.
