Joan Rivers remembered
The centre will host comedy fans on 5 October at a screening of the acclaimed documentary, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. Directed by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg, the film has been received with standing ovations and hailed by critics as a hilarious, touching and exhilarating glimpse into the successes and struggles of the famed comedienne.
Known as the first queen of comedy, Rivers burst onto the scene with her appearance on The Tonight Show, starring Johnny Carson, in the late ’60s. Made to mark her return to the spotlight, Stern’s documentary candidly and hilariously tracks one year in the life of the iconic Rivers, exposing the public successes and private dramas of her 50-year career in stand-up, television, and everything in between.
In the wake of Rivers’s recent death, Johannesburg audiences are now given the opportunity to remember this icon of the comedy stage, and enjoy a multi-award winning documentary, hailed by the New York Times as a “convulsively funny movie” which “takes an up-close and sometimes queasy-personal approach to its motor-mouth subject, who, when she’s not making you howl with laughter (or freeze up in horror), brandishes her deeply held hurts, fears, prejudices, poor judgment and bad taste as if they were stigmata”.
NOTE: There is some crude language.
