Local architects win their spot at exhibition in Italy
Winners now have the opportunity to have their work displayed in Venice, Italy.
South African Pavilion’s curators Stephen Steyn, Dr Emmanuel Nkambule, and Dr Sechaba Maape held a national architecture competition named Political Animals. Competitors were invited to submit scale model-concepts depicting the structures of their schools or institutions. The top six group displays were on show at MOMO Gallery in Parktown and the winners were announced on April 26.
Students and lecturers from architecture schools across South Africa created and submitted scale models that they designed in an attempt to win prestigious spots at an exhibition in Venice, Italy.
The 18th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in Italy is the show’s destination for the winners. South Africa has been a part of the competition since 2011. The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture obtained a permanent exhibition space in 2012 for a period of 20 years. Every two years, the department participates in the architecture exhibition.
The groups received prize money, R6 000 for third place, R12 000 for second place, and R20 000 for first place.
The first prize winners were Emma Skudder, Priyan Moodley and Michael Peneda of the University of Witwatersrand for their Look the Other Way model. Simphiwe Mlambo, Masego Musi and Sesethu Mbonisweni of the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg received second prize for their model Resonance. Tlhologello Sesana and Letlhogonolo Sesana from Tshwane University of Technology received third prize for their model.
“I am happy that we have won. I won’t lie all the models were beautiful and it was a tough decision for judges to choose. I can’t wait to represent South Africa in May,” said Priyan Moodley.
The exhibition opens to the public on May 20 to November 26.
