Gramadoelas to close
NEWTOWN - Patrons and visitors, with fond memories of Gramadoelas restaurant in downtown Johannesburg, will miss one of their favourite hangouts.
This is in the wake of the news that the restaurant will close down at the end of the month.
The decision to close the restaurant was made by a co-founder Eduan Naude, after the untimely death his business and life partner Brian Shalkoff on 1 July.
Shalkoff sustained fatal injuries during an attack by four armed men last month, and he had been on life support. Shalkoff and Naude were on the way to their flat located on the outskirts of Hillbrow when they were ambushed.
Gramadoelas has been operating since 1992 and has hosted the likes of Bill Clinton, Denzel Washington, Charlize Theron, Nick Nolte, Morgan Freeman, David Bowie and Elton John.
Market Theatre CEO Annabell Lebethe said, “All of us at the Market Theatre Foundation are in a state of shock at the sudden passing of Brian. Brian and Eduan are part of the family and have been with the Market Theatre for many years. His passing is untimely and his memory will remain with us for many years to come.”
Theatre employee Brian Motsoko said, “The Market Theatre will not be the same without Gramadoelas… our thoughts and prayers are with Eduan at this time and we wish him well in the next chapter of his life, without Brian Shalkhoff.”
