St John’s climbers go for gold
HOUGHTON - St John's College pupils Matthew Robinson, Neil Gultig and Brandon van Houten shone during the 2013 Gauteng Lead Climbing championships over the last four months.
The championships comprised four competitions, three held in Pretoria and one at the new Wits University climbing wall, with the pupils’ three best scores counting.
According to Robinson’s father, Grant, the top five climbers in each age group, including U13, qualified to represent Gauteng in the National Lead Climbing competition, to be held later this month in Johannesburg and Pretoria.
Robinson said the youth competition included U15, U17 and U19 boys and girls.
“The St John’s boys climbed exceptionally well, and were in a very tight competition. Matthew and another boy, JJ Curtis, won a joint gold medal in the U15 championships, and Gultig and Van Houten qualified for the Gauteng team as well,” he said.
The pupils will represent the school at the national championships, and will hopefully go on to the national selection competition for the 2014 World Youth Sport Climbing Championships to be held in Noumea on the Pacific island of New Caledonia.
