Norwood Primary’s swimming pool revamped

Norwood Primary school’s pupils who were deprived of learning one of life’s essential skills, swimming will this year receive an early Christmas present as one good Samaritan had come on board to renovate their pool.

The school’s principal Africa Hlongwane said the pool had been unusable for five years. A renovated pool would teach children to avoid drowning during the summer season, especially when they were on holiday. Hlongwane said the school couldn’t afford to repair the pool and the dilapidated change rooms as these repairs were costly.

However, the excited Hlongwane announced that Adrienne Hersch Properties offered to repair the pool to the value of R140 000. He said the project would bring smiles to more than 600 pupils at the school.

“As a school we feel honoured and privileged to have established the partnership with Adrienne Hersch Properties; we really appreciate their generous offer. I am sure that one day great South African swimmers will come from Norwood,” he said.

Hlongwane added that once the pool facilities were repaired the community around the school would also benefit. According to Hlongwane, Norwood Primary would offer affordable swimming lessons to community members, which would generate income for the school.

“This will make this a sustainable project as we will have an advanced swimming coach who will provide lessons at a reasonable price.”

Adrienne Hersch said the project was part of their social corporate investment programme.

Hersch said, “We want to raise the standard of the school – our goal is to make the school more appealing for parents to bring their children to the school. If we improve the facilities at the school that is possible.”

Her son Ari said they had to replace the filter which was completely damaged. He said they also had to replace the pump room and install a new motor and filtration system. “We also had to paint the seating stands, upgrade the kiosk and put (up) new signs.” Ari said they hoped to finish the project in mid-October. Hersch appealed to other business operators in the area to join her company in trying to improve other people’s lives.
