Olds Eds go down to Jeppe

The Old Edwardian premier league cricket team were set back in their quest to retain their limited overs title when they lost to Jeppe by eight runs.

Old Eds’ Mike Dunk said, “The pitch lent itself to a low-scoring game, and that is how it turned out.”

Jeppe were first to bat, and debutante Brandon Glover took a wicket in his second over. He continued to bowl brilliantly throughout the innings to finish with 2/25 off his nine overs.

Ryan Cook (1/27) and Richard das Neves (2/22) kept the run rate in check, but the momentum slipped as the two left-arm spinners Yaseen Valli and Malcolm Nofal went for 59 on their nine overs.

“Jeppe finished on 197/7, which was not expected to be a winning score,” said Dunk.

Valli (73) and Nofal (34) put on 52 for the first wicket, but three quick wickets saw a slump, and it was 90/4 when Das Neves joined Valli.

“They put on 50 for the fifth wicket, and when Das Neves was out for a quickfire 35, Old Eds were 142/5 after 35 overs, and were well on target to win the match,” he said.

Valli was out to a spitting delivery, but the tail tried to crawl their way to victory, and managed only 49 in the last 15 overs, to fall short by an agonising eight runs.

“It was a setback to their hopes, but there are plenty of games left to make amends for this unexpected loss,” said Dunk.
