Soweto canoeist shines at African champs in Tunisia
Rosebank-based businesses reaped the rewards of mentoring and sponsoring a young Soweto canoeist, Siyabonga Tyiki.
Tyiki, together with partner Bryan Le Roux, was placed first in the South African junior men’s K2 1000m marathon at the African Canoe Sprint championships in Tunisia.
Tyiki is part of a group of young people from previously disadvantaged areas who realised success as athletes, with the help from a number of businesses in Rosebank and Sandton.
Sponsorship from Adreach, HSE Solutions, Foodcorp and Business Connexion has provided a home for the youth group near Emmarentia Dam, where they train regularly.
The companies also provided the young athletes with necessities such as food, meals, education and clothing.
Tyiki was part of a team that took first place in the U18 category of the South African K2 Vaal River CMH championships. They were also placed first in the U16 category in the South African K1 River championships at the Sasol Lowveld marathon.
