Cellphone thief attempts to bribe police with R10 000

Yeoville police arrested a man who tried to bribe the police with R10 000 after he was found in possession of stolen cellphones and two identity books.

According to police, they were on a routine patrol at the intersection of Rocky and Raymond streets when they noticed a man carrying a black plastic bag. Police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji said the police approached the man. “Police stopped and searched the man and found a cellphone; he could not explain where he bought it.”

According to Malatji, the police took the man to his residential address in Yeoville. He said, “Police found eight cellphones and two South African identity books and he could not give an explanation as why he was in possession of the said property.”

Malatji added the suspect then tried to bribe the police with R10 000 and the police added a charge of bribery. The suspect was expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court soon.
