Taxi driver nab suspect

JOUBERT PARK – Taxi drivers helped with the capture of a suspect who allegedly robbed and murdered a 23-year-old man.

Police spokesperson Constable Mduduzi Zondo said the victim had been walking along Bok Street carrying his luggage. “He was approached by the 38-year-old suspect who demanded his cellphone,” he said. “When he refused to hand it over a fight ensued between them.”

Zondo said the suspect then drew a knife and stabbed the victim in his thighs and took the cellphone and a wallet. “The suspect tried to flee the scene, however taxi drivers in the area who had seen the incident foiled his escape,” said Zondo.

Police were called to the scene and the taxi drivers handed the suspect over to police who arrested him.

Zondo thanked community members and taxi drivers for working with the police, and handing over the suspect unharmed. “We thank them for not taking the law into their own hands,” he said. The suspect is expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and robbery soon.
