Historic film society to launch
JOBURG - A new film society that will focus on historical documentary films is to be launched at the end of March.
The Majestic Historic Society, in association with the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre and the Ditsong Museum of Military History, will screen Otto Frank: Father of Anne at its launch event.
Otto Frank’s life after the Second World War centred on his daughter, Anne, while everything else became secondary.
Anne Frank died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in March 1945 at the age of 15.
From her father’s perspective, his dilemma was whether or not to publish her now internationally-acknowledged diary as one of the voices of the Holocaust.
In celebration of the teenager’s life and legacy, Otto Frank: Father of Anne was specially produced by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.
The film features rare archival material and interviews with Otto Frank, family members and friends.
It will be introduced by Radio Today broadcaster and film buff Selwyn Klass, and Tali Nates, director of the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre will light a memorial candle to honour Anne Frank’s death.
The film will be followed by a catered supper with wine.
The society is the brain-child of the Majestic Film Society’s Henni Erasmus, Niel Schoeman and Klass.
“The society will focus on documentary films which give history ‘in the raw’. The museum is a wonderful place for these events, as it helps us really reflect on the character of the films,” said Erasmus.
Booking is essential.
The screening will take place on 30 March at the Ditsong Museum of Military History, Erlswold Way, Saxonwold, at 5.30pm.
