Make positive choices post-matric
It is imperative for matriculants who chose not have tertiary education to take positive steps in order to make the year count.

This is according to Dr Anneka van den Hoek, of the Independent Institute of Education.
The academic manager at the institute also said that not doing anything often leads young people into a downward spiral, which is hard to emerge from.
“While you may feel dejected, [remember that] failure only happens when you stop trying; now is the time to be brave and not let the year drag on any longer… have a plan for constructive growth,” she said.
Van den Hoek advised matriculants to move on and find something that would allow them to improve upon past performances.
She also highlighted that options are available to boost skills, such as short courses and registering to repeat school level subjects.
“Additionally, being successful in this endeavour will improve your chances of securing a space at a public our private higher education institution come 2015,” she said.
Van den Hoek offered more guidelines to matriculants:
- Change your attitude towards failure
- Ask for help when you are experiencing problems
- Ensure that you have all the necessary reading material for the courses being taken
- Set achievable long- and short-term goals
- Learn from past experiences and mistakes
