Salsa heats up the dancefloor
Salsa dancing has moved beyond learning the steps, as people can now book to have salsa services for birthday parties, bachelorette parties and weddings.
These services are offered by Estilo Cubano, a salsa school established by Monica Munoz.
Munoz, a Chilean native, began salsa dancing in 1991 and has perfected the dance and its culture for the past 23 years. She moved to South Africa in 2002 and established Estilo Cubano.
Munoz specialises in teaching Cuban salsa and highlighted the immense growth of the dance in South Africa.

“Salsa is slowly becoming an important social event for local communities in Johannesburg,” she said. She added that it allows people to socialise and maintain fitness while learning to dance.
Estilo Cubano offers salsa classes at various restaurants in Morningside and Sandhurst. Services are also available in Pretoria.
The school also offers salsa parties.
“Salsa parties have provided people with the perfect opportunity to meet new people,” she said.
Lessons are held weekly and range from beginners’ classes to advanced. Classes are available for groups, individuals and for those wishing to maintain their fitness.
