Hillbrow police arrested a man for allegedly being in possession of illegal firearm ammunition.
Hillbrow police arrested a man for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
According to police the incident took place at the corner of Wolmarans and King George streets in Joubert Park. Hillbrow police spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo said the police were on their routine patrol in the area when they noticed a man acting strangely when he saw them and decided to approach him. Zondo said, “The man started to walk with a limp as if he was hiding something. We stopped and asked to search him.”
He said when the police searched the suspect they found a 9mm pistol with one round of ammunition hidden in the front of his waistband and they arrested him. Zondo said the serial number of the firearm was not filed off. “When we checked it, the firearm was positively reported in a housebreaking and theft in Vryheid in Kwazulu-Natal early this year.”
The suspect appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court and the case was remanded for further investigation. The 22-year-old suspect from Hillbrow was still in police custody. Zondo added that the firearm was going to be taken for ballistic tests to check whether it was used in other criminal activities.
