Thanks to an unjust rule of law, dishonest people blatantly abuse the squatter protection law.
In response to the article, Can’t get rid of tenants from hell, North Eastern Tribune, week ending 2 May, I can add another a couple who are tenants from hell.
The husband and wife [names withheld] usually rent a place, pay for the first few months and then become abusive, threatening and dangerous, destroying property and causing mental and financial misery.
This couple is protected and aided by the husband’s family and get away with murder.
I have been threatened with words like, “I will do away with you” and “You don’t know who you are dealing with”, along with many other threats and abuse.
They were even given pro bono counsel by a law firm who did not even contact me to know the truth. Only when I appealed to the manager and the Italian Welfare came to my assistance did they drop out of the case.
The man lied and bribed his way into getting an order to let him back in the property, with electricity and water at my cost.
I had to resort to a lawyer and get into debt to pay for his services. Eventually after a year of living hell they left, leaving behind filth and damage.
Their modus operandi is to rent from single vulnerable women and take full advantage. I believe I was their third victim, probably there have been more.
Is there some decent lawyer who can advise on how we can prevent this from happening, surely we have rights as well?
Please offer a service to us, the law abiding community, where we can get a reference on individuals before we let them into our homes.
Legal Aid is useless as they will not even listen to you. These people own nothing but they get the help.
No wonder we are the most stressed nation in the world, and no wonder we, in our golden years, have to give up our freedom and hide in old age homes and wait for death.
