Parktown Girls’ plea to find the Nigerian girls
Pupils from Parktown High School for Girls demand the release of the schoolgirls kidnapped from the Nigerian village of Chibok by Boko Haram.
This came after more than 270 girls were abducted by militants from their boarding school in Chibok, in Nigeria, on 14 April.
The Parktown girls made posters which were placed on the fence in Emmarentia Avenue as part of their #BringBackOurGirls plea.
An assembly entitled “Being Brave” was held at the school on 5 May – their message aimed to encourage the abducted girls to stay brave for themselves and for their fellow pupils.
Being an all-girls school, Headmaster Anthea Ceresto said all girls have the right to education and as a school, they believe that far more awareness of, and action to, freeing the Nigerian girls was needed.
“Through the display of posters and the use of social media, Parktown High School for Girls wishes to express its outrage at the abduction of the Nigerian girls from their school,” said Ceresto.
“As a girls’ school, we urge the Nigerian Government and the global community to do all in their powers to find the girls and protect the rights of all girls to attend school in safety.”
Grade 12 pupil, Annable Fenton urged the global community to take action to stop the gross human rights violations taking place in Nigeria.
“Education is a right for all – regardless of age, gender, race or religion. We say: Bring Back Our Girls.”
Meanwhile, activists led by actress Rosie Motene marched to the Nigerian Consulate in Illovo, Sandton on 8 May.
The march was under the #BringBackOurGirls global campaign that has seen public figures such as Michelle Obama and Justin Timberlake endorsing it, and demanding that the government of Nigeria place more resources, attention and focus on liberating the abducted girls.
VIDEO: On Monday, Boko Haram released a 27-minute video, showing about 130 girls in Muslim dress and reading from the Qur’an. Most of the seized girls are Christians. Two were singled out to tell the camera they had converted to Islam.
