Law enforcement crackdown in Greenside

GREENSIDE – Following several complaints by Greenside residents, a joint operation by various officials was conducted on the busy Gleneagles and Greenway roads.

The operation included various role players like Parkview police, Region B Joburg Metro police, Department of Home Affairs officials, the Liquor Board, and health and urban inspectors.

Greenside has an active night life, with restaurants, pubs and clubs. “Many complaints have come from the public in this regard and this informed the decision to have an operation there and many more are to follow suit,” said Parkview police spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha.

The operation addressed issues like outlets operating without proper liquor licenses or not in compliance with the requirements of their licenses, illegal parking, illegal immigrants, noise pollution, and drunk and disorderly conduct by patrons.

Ramovha said 20 illegal immigrants were arrested and several traffic violation tickets were issued. Some restaurants were issued with fines by health inspectors for not meeting the required standards in terms of their kitchens, and a restaurant had to be shut down completely for the night as the management had allegedly ignored previous warnings.

He added that employers who are found to be employing people without proper documentation would be liable to pay a fine of up to R20 000 per person employed.
