Letter to the editor: Suspicious bakkie spotted in Orange Grove

Fiona Ringdahl writes:

I felt that I should report the following incident in order to prevent others falling for this scam.

On 5 June at 10.30am, a small white bakkie with a canopy on the back pulled up outside our house in Central Road, Orange Grove.

My husband noticed a tall, well-dressed Coloured man alight from the bakkie and walk up and down peering through our splitpole fence. My husband looked over the fence to investigate and startled the man. He then asked if he could be of any help.

The man took out a sheet of paper and said that he had come to read our meter. This could not be, as our meter had been read for this month on the specified date by our usual meter reader, whom we know by name. My husband told him this.

The stranger’s story then changed: he said he was an auditor who had come to read the meter. My husband said we were not notified that an ‘auditor’ was coming to re-read the meter, and he would not allow a stranger into the house, but would read the meter and give the reading to him if he waited outside.

The ‘auditor’ said this would be ok. The meter was read and when my husband returned to give it to him he had disappeared in the white bakkie.
