R8 million project for Maryvale College

Maryvale College Primary School staff members, pupils and parents were over the moon as the first turning of the sod ceremony for the new R8 million development at the school.

Maryvale College Primary School staff members, pupils and parents were over the moon as the first turning of the sod ceremony for the new R8-million development at the school took place.

Principal Elizabeth Redmond said the development involved the school’s expansion which included a three-storey building providing six foundation classes, and a care centre providing a support learning centre, occupational and speech therapy and counselling.

She said the centre would also provide religious education classes and ablution facilities for foundation pupils. Redmond said, “Five years ago the school started double stream classes, meaning two classes for each grade, which doubled the numbers of pupils. There is huge demand as there are many pupils who are on the waiting list.”

Anglo American Chairman’s Fund client relationship manager, Deepa Patel, said the school underscored its value to the community of Maryvale and surrounds by expanding the school with the construction of classrooms.

Patel said, “ As sponsors, our partnership with Maryvale College dates back to 1999 when Anglo American contributed towards funding the development of the school. Since that time, we have consistently supported its growth, with key donations being made in 1999 in conjunction with the De Beers Fund, as well as our current donation of R3.8 million which will facilitate the building of more classrooms, a therapy centre and ablution facilities.

“Education is the cornerstone to further the country’s economic and social development.”

Prof. Kim Hein-Ncube, representing parents and the fundraising committee said, “I thank our generous sponsors whose donation moved our project from a dream to a design, and who continue ensuring that the project is realised.”

A parent and former pupil at the school, Paul Farrow said, “Mrs Redmond has done so much for the school and maintained its high standards. I’m proud that my children can attend Maryvale and get a superior education as a result of the dedication of Mrs Redmond and her teachers.”

Despite all the donations made, the school has a shortfall of R1.5 million and appealed for more donations.
