The competition, which was run by the University of Witswatersrand’s faculty of science, challenges Grade 10 learners to produce a poster on the properties and applications of a strong material, such as diamonds, and promotes the application of science in our lives as well as an interest in science as a career.
Candace Main, Nomonde Ntsonkota, Nina Simon and Racilya Naicker participated in this event alongside 80 other entrants and were placed second for Outstanding Comprehension, as well as Overall Excellence for their poster entitled Wanted! Synthesised or NOT Rhenium Diboride. They received a prize for the school of R10 000 for their achievement.
Principal of Hyde Park High School Manolis Vogiatzis said, “The school is very proud of its young budding scientists who were acknowledged for their talent by the University of Witwatersrand.”
