CCTV footage leads to arrest
PARKHURST - Thanks to local CCTV cameras in Parkhurst, a 30-year-old male was captured stealing from a vehicle and was then arrested on charges of theft out of a motor vehicle as well as possession of stolen property.
According to Parkview police spokesperson Lloyd Ramavho, police arrived at 13th Street after they were called by the local security control room, concerning a suspect who was on the run after he was captured on street surveillance cameras stealing from a vehicle.
The police found a car-jamming device, one Samsung Galaxy tablet, one GPS, two car chargers and several spark-plugs.
The owner of the vehicle that was broken into was also on the scene and she positively identified the stolen items as hers.
According to Ramavho, the area has recently experienced a spike in theft out of motor vehicles incidents.
“As a result, police members followed up on leads and investigations led them to Johannesburg CBD,” he said.
Investigations by Parkview police members Captain Sandile Mkhize and Sergeant Peter Mpofu led them to a pawn-shop where fake bank notes, illegal substances (drugs) and several suspected stolen items were found.
“The items were seized by police after the shop owner ran away upon seeing the police in the company of the suspect,” explained Ramavho.
The suspect was arrested and will appear at Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court soon.
