A taxi load of people held hostage

YEOVILLE - Three men have been arrested for kidnapping following a phone call made to police by the husband of one of the hostages.

The Yeoville police received a phone call stating that 10 people were locked in the basement of a flat located on the corner of Saunders and Grafton streets.

Police dispatched a vehicle to investigate, and upon arrival found 10 men and women locked in the basement of the flat with three suspects guarding them.

The victims reported that they had boarded a taxi from Limpopo’s Musina to Johannesburg on 11 January.

When they arrived in Joburg, they were taken to a flat in Yeoville where their belongings were confiscated by the driver of the vehicle. The guards demanded payment of R3 000 for their release.

One of the victims was allowed to contact her husband by her captors in order to obtain R3 000 for her release. The husband of the victim was instructed to send money via a money market, however he alerted police.

Constable Thabo Malatji of the Yeoville police said, “We are urging the public to please use taxis that operate legally and if they notice suspicious vehicles, to contact the police.”
