Pirates marathon total success
GREENSIDE- Thousands of runners entered the Pirates Marathon on 15 February at the Pirates Club.
“We received approximately 2 600 entrants, so all in all it has been a great turnout,” said Hennie Booysen, chairman of Pirates Club.
Despite the early morning start, many supporters came to show their support for the 21km run, even camping on the fields.
Winner of the men’s race Lucky Mohale said the race was excellent preparation for the Durban City Marathon which he will be entering later this month. “This course was very tough, you must change it,” Mohale jokingly said to the race organisers.
Second-placed Mbongeni Ngxazozo was thrilled with his performance. “I am very happy especially because it is the first time I entered,” he said. Derocious Makhobalo came in third and shared Mohale’s sentiments. “It was an extremely difficult run,” Mokhobalo said.
In the women’s race, Nolene Conrad took first place. “The race was more like a training run for me, and I only went hard for the last 8km’s,” she said. Cornelia Joubert came in second and Mpho Mabuza ran in third.
