The evening opened with an ambitious programme of Johannes Brahms and Hans Zimmer pieces by the impressively-sized St John’s College orchestra. According to two Grade 12 pupils from St Mary’s, Liesel Roux and Robyn Murning, it was exciting to see less-common instruments such as the violin, double bass, trombones and tubas on the stage by the St John’s boys.
Another highlight of the evening was the performance of the St Mary’s jazz band, which performed Piazzola’s Libertango and the Otis Redding classic Respect. The St Mary’s flute ensemble, saxophone ensemble, clarinet ensemble and string ensemble all gave polished performances.
The evening came to a close with a fun, informal performance of a blues piece, Louie Louie, by the St John’s big band which ended the evening on a high note.
