In search of…

PARKTOWN- AN EXHIBITION titled "In Search Of..." opened at the Goethe-Institut of Johannesburg on 9 April.

The exhibition presented two bodies of work by Soweto-born photographer Musa Nxumalo namely; Alternative Kidz and In/Glorious.

According to the artist, these two series look at “the melting pot that is urban youth culture in Johannesburg.”

The photographs could be considered partial self-portraits, representing a world in which the artist is personally immersed. However, they are also enigmatic images that reach far beyond their immediate context.

Nxumalo studied at the Market Photo Workshop, “I took my chance with photography and that resonated with me,” he said.

Nxumalo has also participated in a range of group exhibitions both locally and abroad, including four solo shows.

According to Nxumalo, the exhibition is a result of his book entitled In Search Of…, which includes Alternative Kidz and In/Glorious and more recent projects.

The book was recently nominated for the prestigious First Book Award and has been shortlisted to the final 10.

The exhibition will run until 31 May.
