Parktown boys shine at World Scholar’s Cup

PARKTOWN - PARKTOWN Boys’ High School participated in the provincial round of first-ever World Scholar’s Cup from 23 to 24 May and the competition presented the boys with unique challenges over the two days.

The cup is a cross-curricular event which includes debate, collaborative writing and general knowledge quizzes.

The school entered three teams of senior boys, with Team 517, comprising Gabriel Matthews, Tristan Wilkinson and Zidaan Habib placing first overall.

However, the school boys also placed third and fifth overall which meant that the teams from the school made up 60 percent of the top five teams in the competition.

The third-placed group was Team 519 which consisted of Mokgeseng Ramaisa, Micah Bwanali and Adam Vanker; while Team 518 with Muhammad Jhetam, Ronan Morris and Mishaylen Lutchman was placed fifth overall in the competition.

The boys who participated also collected numerous trophies and silver and gold medals on the day, and all three teams qualified for the Global Rounds to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 22 to 26 June.

The World Scholar’s Cup Global Round will bring together 2 500 leading scholars from over 45 countries.

The biggest need at present is to provide adequate sponsorship for the boys in order to allow them to represent South Africa at this prestigious event in June. The school is currently looking for individuals or companies willing to sponsor the teams.
