Sensei Russell Sim of Goju Kai Karate Academy said, “It was a fantastic achievement to get 12 of my dojo members into the national squad and the dojo members’ hard work resulted in all of them bringing back medals from the prestigious African Union Zone 5 Championships. It is a long and rigorous selection process.”
According to Sim, the dojo brought home 20 medals comprising five gold, 13 silver and two bronze.
“All 12 members in the team were also awarded their Protea colours for karate, which was the ultimate aim,” Sensei Sim added.
“Representing one’s country at an all-styles level is the pinnacle of sports karate in South Africa. Many hours of training went into preparing them for this tournament and the results speak for themselves.”
