St Mary’s School’s Lead SA hero

JOBURG - Heath Krynauw, a Grade 10 pupil at St Mary’s School in Waverley, along with her two brothers, was recently named as Lead SA's hero for the month of September.

They were selected as a result of their initiative, Soles for Souls shoe collection – an initiative that was started by their older brother, Joshua, five years ago.

Heath, Liam and Oliver have collected more than 2 000 pairs of shoes since starting the initiative, which they have personally delivered to children at underprivileged schools, including Atteridgeville Primary School.

“What makes us happy is having personal interactions with the children such as sizing the children’s feet and choosing a pair of shoes for them, sitting down and talking to them and playing sports with them,” said Heath.

“That’s why we give a few days of our souls to put soles onto many children’s feet.”

They recently explained on 5FM radio station that they began the initiative by placing donation bins around the school and the response they received was better than expected.

The siblings will continue to donate shoes to underprivileged schools during their time at St Mary’s.
